UNDERSTANDING SOUND (Waves, Vibration)

We can define a sound wave as a disturbance which travels through some medium:

  • The 'sound' describes what is heard when sound waves pass through a medium to the ear.
  • All sounds are made by vibrations of molecules through which the sound travels.

Many of the suggested activities can be done at home. The activities are not designed to provide answers. Instead, they are intended to help students understand the way things work and to ask questions and design new experiments of their own.


About The Sound Quiz

The purpose of the QUIZ is not a test. The Sound Quiz questions encourage students to think more deeply and research answers for themselves and/or get more guidance from friends, parents and teachers.

Questions are designed to encourage students to:

  1. Explore and describe sound and the motion of sound waves
  2. Explore and describe effect of sound on an object
  3. Identify and describe the source of sounds from various objects
  4. Explore identify and describe the the difference between sounds from various objects
  5. Experiment and observe the effect that objects have on sound
  6. Ask BIG questions

Concepts such as vibration, waves,frequency & pitch are explained:

  • Vibration (for sound) is a moving back and forth of particles about a point of equilibrium. If this motion causes a transmitting medium to vibrate, this vibration may transmit sound waves to the ear and to the brain.
  • Frequency is the rate at which the source produces sound waves, i.e. complete cycles of high and low pressure regions. In other words, frequency is the number of times per second that a vibrating body completes one cycle of motion.
  • Pitch is a sound whose frequency is clear and stable enough to be heard. The pitch is determined mostly by frequency and is usually identified with it (it depends in a small degree, on the sound level and the auditory system but (to avoid confusion), these differences are often ignored when discussing answers to quiz questions presented here).
  • Frequency: Low pitched or bass sounds have low frequencies. High-pitched or treble sounds have high frequencies.

Sound is another name for some types of vibration. Not all vibrations result in sounds
