UNDERSTANDING ELECTRICITY - FLIPPED CLASSROOM QUIZ:

FLIPPED CLASSROOM is a form of blended learning in which students learn content online by watching video lectures, usually at home. What used to be called 'homework' is now done in class with teachers and students collaborating, discussing and solving questions.

In a 'flipped' project, teacher interaction with students is more personalised. The emphasis is on guidance and mutual discovery rather than lecturing.

The starting point for this particular 'flipped' activity is an on-line science QUIZ:

ON-LINE ELECTRICITY & CIRCUITS QUIZ AVAILABE NOW

  • When the QUIZ has been completed, students are sent results by email.
  • In the email, there is a link for more information, activities and experiments to help the student understand more about each question and the answer.
  • Students are encouraged to investigate, ask questions and design their own experiments.

UNDERSTANDING ELECTRICITY QUIZ (Using Scientific Language):

THIS IS A QUIZ - IT IS NOT A TEST

The purpose of the QUIZ is to encourage students to research answers for themselves and then have an opportunity to get guidance from their friends and from their teacher.

Questions are designed to encourage students to:

  1. Explore and describe electrical charge and motion
  2. Explore and describe simple electrical circuits
  3. Explore and understand electrical storage & distribution systems
  4. Experiment safely with simple circuits
  5. Become familiar with and use scientific language
  6. Ask BIG questions

Concepts such as 'charge', 'current' & 'particle' are differentiated and explained:

Here is a list of statements that could have been taken from almost any K-12 textbook. Based on your research, consider which (if any) of these statements are clear (unambiguous), scientific and/or correct?

  1. An electric current is the overall movement of charged particles in one direction.
  2. To obtain an electric current, there needs to be a continuous circuit from one terminal of a battery to the other.
  3. An electric current in a circuit transfers energy from the battery to the circuit components. No current is ‘used up’ in this process.
  4. In most circuits, the moving charged particles are negatively charged electrons that are always present in the wires and other components of the circuit.
  5. The battery pushes the electrons in a circuit.
  6. Scientific language is required & promoted for understanding & discussion of all concepts

Getting Started:

When starting out, students, parents and teachers are NOT expected to be able to answer many of the QUIZ questions correctly - if any at all.

As the course progresses and knowledge increases, students, parents and teachers will have additional opportunities to test their new understanding about each of the questions.

Parents and teachers may point students to related information, but please do not tell them the answers.

Reading the next few lines should help you answer questions in the QUIZ:

  • For each question, there is one or more on-line videos that you should watch that will help you understand the question better and will help you select the correct answers.
  • Many of the questions include 'interactive' and/or 'simulator' software.
  • After you have worked through the questions, videos and simulators, attempt the QUIZ again (you may attempt the QUIZ as many times as you like).
  • If you do get any answers wrong, then check out the videos and interactives and ask your friends and teachers for help.
  • Do the videos or ideas that they raise give you any ideas about experiments that you would like to try yourself?
  • If you find any interesting videos or links, make a note of them so that you can share them in class,
  • Make a note in the DISCUSSION sections for questions that you would like to discuss or that you would like answered in class.
