Sound Band Banner

We can define a sound wave as a disturbance which travels through some medium:

  • The 'sound' describes what is heard when sound waves pass through a medium to the ear.
  • All sounds are made by vibrations of molecules through which the sound travels.
  • Reference: Sound - Wikipedia

Sound is a mechanical pressure wave that results from the back and forth vibration of the particles of the medium through which a sound wave is moving.

The content of both the DISCOVER and PROJECTS sections are for students who have already completed the QUIZ and the feedback supplied for each question.

Visit The Physics Classroom for excellent information presented using scientific language.

Salford University - Physics of Sound Waves:

An authoritative learning resource for wave and sound physics. [http://www.acoustics.salford.ac.uk/feschools/|This site]] uses high speed video and animations to help explain waves and acoustics.

Understanding Sound:

The starting point for the 'flipped' DISCOVERY activities is an on-line science QUIZ:

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT STUDENTS & TEACHERS FIRST COMPLETE THE SOUND QUIZ BEFORE VIEWING THE STUDENT WIKI (THIS PAGE), THE FLIP CONTENT OR THE TEACHER WIKI CONTENT.

SOUND QUIZ IS AVAILABLE ON-LINE NOW

Many of the activities can be done at home. The activities are not designed to provide answers. Instead, they are intended to help students understand the way things work and to ask questions and design new experiments of their own.
